France's Parliament approved a vaccine to help curb the omicron variant

January 6 .- France's Parliament on Thursday approved President Emmanuel Macron's plans to approve a vaccine to help curb the spread of the omicron variant, following a tumultuous debate fueled by Macron's comments that he wanted to "piss off" the unvaccinated. Macron told the newspaper "Le Parisien" earlier this week that he wanted to complicate the lives of those who refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, removing them from public places so that they would end up being punctured. Macron's foul language, just three months before the presidential election, was widely seen as a politically calculated expression, capitalizing on the population's growing frustration against the unvaccinated.More than 90% of those over the age of 12 have received at least two doses, according to government data.

Health Minister Olivier Veran said a record number of people since October 1 received the first vaccine on Wednesday after Macron's comments were published. Legislators in the lower house approved the bill that includes the vaccine passport shortly after 5 a.m., following an all-night session, by a margin of 214 to 93. Many of those who voted in against the project were from the extreme right or left. The legislation will go to the Senate before a final vote in the National Assembly. For several months, French citizens have to show a vaccination proof or a negative COVID-19 test to enter places such as cinemas and cafes and use the trains. But given the increase in infections of the delta and omicron variants, the government has decided to abolish the test option in the new bill.

The regulations for the approval of the vaccine will apply to those over 16 years of age and not to those over 12, as initially intended by the Government.European countries have been debating whether to coerce citizens to get vaccinated through mandates. On Wednesday, Italy made the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory for people over 50 years old, and teachers and public health workers were already required to get vaccinated. Prime Minister Jean Castex assured that countries that have moved towards compulsory vaccination, as Italy and Austria have lower vaccination rates than France. Castex also said France was prepared to move towards a fourth COVID-19 vaccine when the time was right. On Wednesday, France recorded a record of more than 332,000 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, and another 246 COVID deaths in hospitals.
